Lincoln Highway photographsAbstract:
Snapshots and professionally produced photographs of sections of the Lincoln Highway and of automobiles travelling it. A few
images are of towns and attractions along its route. The majority of photographs document the highway in Utah, Nevada and
California, and were taken at a time when the Lincoln Highway Association was promoting, unsuccessfully, the southern route
from Salt Lake City to Reno (the Goodyear Section) as the official federal highway. Among the best documented locations are
the Goodyear Section and Fallon Sinks, both in Nevada. Numerous images show autos on sections of road in poor repair or flooded.
Also pictured is Gael Hoag, Lincoln Highway Assocation Field Secretary of the Nevada Consul, who lobbied for the improvement
of the Highway across Nevada and Utah. A few views in Nebraska, Indiana, and perhaps other states are present.

The Lincoln Highway was the first transcontinental highway in America, stretching from New York City to San Francisco. The
Lincoln Highway Association was formed in 1913 to plan, promote and sign the highway, the goal of completion being the 1915
Panama-Pacific Internationl Exposition in San Francisco. The Association oversaw the planning and improvement of the highway
until the mid-1920s, when state governments began to take the initiative in highway construction.
